Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman Set to Wow Audiences with ‘Fast Car’ Collaboration at 2024 Grammy Awards

According to a report from Variety, it has been suggested that Tracy Chapman, who is not frequently seen in public, may make a special appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards to perform alongside Luke Combs.

According to inside sources, Variety has revealed that Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing together on stage. They will be singing "Fast Car," which was originally a hit song by Chapman in the late 1980s. The song tells the story of a couple trying to break free from the cycle of poverty. Surprisingly, Combs included a cover of the song on his album "Gettin' Old" in 2023, which made his version of "Fast Car" reach the top of the country radio charts.

If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be a significant and unexpected moment that will likely generate a lot of buzz. Variety reports that she has only appeared on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.

Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite the country cover reaching No. 1 in July, his team stated that there were no current plans for a collaboration with Chapman. However, they also mentioned that Combs would be thrilled if the opportunity to perform together ever came up.

Even though she has been mostly private about the song's comeback, Chapman has released a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached the top spot on the country charts, she mentioned she was pleased for Combs and appreciative of a younger audience connecting with her song. She also mentioned feeling honored to have her song on the country charts, even though she never anticipated it.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is specifically given to songwriters, and in this case, it was given to Chapman, who became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the only songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.

"I regret not being able to attend tonight. It's a great honor for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since its release. Thank you to the CMAs and a special thanks to Luke and all the fans of 'Fast Car.'"

Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammy Awards. This nomination is his seventh at the ceremony. If he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.

The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
