According to a report from Variety, it is being said that Tracy Chapman, who is not frequently seen in public, may make a special appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards where she will perform alongside Luke Combs.
According to insiders familiar with the artists, Variety has revealed that Chapman will be performing "Fast Car" with Luke Combs. The song, originally released in the late 1980s by Chapman, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from a cycle of poverty. Surprisingly, Combs included a cover of the song on his album Gettin' Old in 2023, which led to it becoming a hit on country radio charts.
If Chapman does decide to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed moments of the evening. Variety reports that she has only appeared on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
However, Combs has openly expressed his desire to sing "Fast Car" with Tracy Chapman, the original songwriter and performer. In July, after his country cover reached No. 1, his team stated that there were currently no plans for a joint performance with Chapman, but Combs would be thrilled if the chance ever came up.
Even though she has mostly kept a low profile since the song gained popularity again, Chapman has released a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached number one on the country charts, she mentioned feeling pleased for Combs and appreciative of a new group of fans enjoying her song. She also mentioned feeling honored to see her song on the country charts, even though she never expected it.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is specifically given to songwriters, and so it was given to Chapman. This marked the first time a Black woman had won the CMA Song of the Year as a sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but a message from her was read out loud after her win was announced.
"I regret not being able to attend tonight. It's a great honor for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs and especially to Luke and all the fans of 'Fast Car' for their support."
Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammy Awards. This nomination is his seventh at the ceremony, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.
The 2024 Grammy Awards will be broadcasted from the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4, 2024. The event will be shown on CBS and will also be available for live streaming on Paramount+.
