According to a report from Variety, there is news that Luke Combs will be performing with Tracy Chapman at the Grammy Awards in 2024. Tracy Chapman is known for not frequently making public appearances, but it seems like she may be making an exception for this event.
According to insiders familiar with the artists, Variety has revealed that Chapman will be joining Luke Combs for a performance of "Fast Car," a folk-pop hit from the late 1980s that tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. The song unexpectedly became a part of Combs' music collection in 2023, when he covered it on his Gettin' Old album and saw his version of "Fast Car" rise to the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be a significant surprise and probably one of the most discussed moments of the evening. Reports from Variety show that she has only been seen performing in front of cameras three times since 2009, which was the end of her last tour.
Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original writer and singer of the song. Despite his country cover reaching No. 1 in July, his team stated that he has no immediate plans to perform with Chapman, but he would be thrilled if the chance came up in the future.
Chapman, who has mostly avoided the spotlight since the song regained popularity, has released a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she mentioned feeling "happy" for Combs and appreciative of a new group of fans enjoying her song. She also mentioned that she never anticipated being on the country charts, but she is grateful for the honor.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is specifically for songwriters and went to Chapman, who became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony but did send a message to be read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.
"I regret that I couldn't attend the event tonight. It's a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged 35 years after it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs and especially thankful to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car'."
Combs has received a nomination for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammy Awards for his song "Fast Car". This nomination is his seventh at the Grammy ceremony. If he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.
The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4, 2024. The ceremony will be televised on CBS and available for live streaming on Paramount+.
