Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman Set to Wow Audiences with “Fast Car” Performance at the Grammy Awards

  • by

According to a report from Variety, Tracy Chapman, who rarely makes public appearances, is rumored to potentially perform at the 2024 Grammy Awards alongside Luke Combs.

According to insiders familiar with the musicians, Variety has revealed that Chapman will be joining Luke Combs on stage to sing "Fast Car," a popular folk-pop song from the late 1980s about a couple trying to break free from poverty. This song unexpectedly became a hit for Combs in 2023 when he covered it on his album Gettin' Old, propelling his version of "Fast Car" to the top of the country radio charts.

If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be a significant surprise and probably one of the most discussed moments of the evening. Variety reports that she has only been on camera performing three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.

Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and performer. Despite the country cover reaching No. 1 in July, his team stated that there were no current plans for a collaboration with Chapman. However, they mentioned that he would be thrilled if the chance to perform together ever came up.

Even though she has not been very visible in the media since the song became popular again, Chapman has made a few statements showing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached number 1 on the country charts, she expressed her happiness for Combs and her gratitude for a new generation of fans enjoying her song. She mentioned that she never thought her song would be on the country charts, but she feels honored to be included.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is given specifically to the songwriters, so Tracy Chapman, who wrote the song, became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.

"I apologize for not being able to attend tonight. It is a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since its release. I am grateful to the CMAs and especially to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car'."

Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammys. This nomination is Combs' seventh at the awards show, and if he were to win, it would be his first Grammy win.

The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4, 2024. The event will be shown on CBS and can also be streamed live on Paramount+.
