According to a report from Variety, it is rare to see Tracy Chapman in public, but she might make an appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards to perform with Luke Combs.
According to insiders, Variety has reported that Chapman is set to perform "Fast Car" with Luke Combs at an upcoming event. The song, originally a folk-pop hit from the late 1980s, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his album "Gettin' Old" in 2023, which helped propel it to the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be a major surprise and probably one of the most discussed moments of the evening. As reported by Variety, she has only been seen performing on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite his country cover reaching No. 1 in July, his team stated that there were no current plans for a collaboration with Chapman. However, they mentioned that Combs would be enthusiastic if the opportunity to perform together did arise.
Even though she has not been in the spotlight much since the song became popular again, Chapman has made a few statements showing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached the number one spot on the country charts, she expressed happiness for Combs and appreciation for a new group of fans who are enjoying her song. She mentioned that she did not anticipate being on the country charts, but she feels honored to be included.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This prestigious honor is given to the songwriter of the winning song, and in this case, it was Chapman who became the first Black woman to win the CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.
"I regret that I couldn't be present with all of you this evening. It is a great honor for my song to be acknowledged again 35 years after it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs, Luke, and all the fans of 'Fast Car' for this recognition."
The song "Fast Car" by Combs has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammys this year. This nomination is his seventh at the ceremony, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.
The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
