Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman Set to Wow Audiences with “Fast Car” Performance at the Grammys

  • by

According to a report from Variety, there is a possibility that Tracy Chapman will make a rare public appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards, where she will reportedly perform with Luke Combs.

According to insiders, Variety has revealed that Chapman and Luke Combs will perform together on stage, singing Chapman's 1980s folk-pop hit "Fast Car." The song tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his album "Gettin' Old" in 2023, which helped it reach the top of the country radio charts.

If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed moments of the evening. Variety reports that she has only appeared on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.

However, Combs has openly expressed his desire to sing "Fast Car" alongside the original songwriter and singer. Even though his country cover of the song reached No. 1 in July, his team stated that he currently has no scheduled performances with Chapman. However, they also mentioned that he would be enthusiastic if the chance to perform together ever came up.

Even though she has not been in the spotlight much since the song became popular again, Chapman has made a few statements showing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car". When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she expressed her happiness for Combs and thanked a new group of fans for embracing her song. She mentioned that she never imagined her song would be on the country charts, but she is honored to be included.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This prestigious award is given to songwriters, and in this case, it was given to Chapman, who became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.

"I regret not being able to attend tonight. It is a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs, and I want to give a special thanks to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car.'"

Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammy Awards. This nomination is his seventh at the Grammy ceremony. If he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.

The 2024 Grammy Awards ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4, 2024. It will be televised on CBS and available for live streaming on Paramount+.
