According to a report from Variety, it is rare for Tracy Chapman to be seen in public nowadays, but she may make an appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards where she is expected to perform with Luke Combs.
According to insiders, Variety has revealed that Chapman is set to perform "Fast Car" with Luke Combs at an upcoming event. The song, originally a hit for Chapman in the late 1980s, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from a cycle of poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his album Gettin' Old in 2023, which helped propel it to the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be a major surprise and probably one of the most discussed moments of the evening. According to Variety, she has only appeared on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
However, Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" alongside the original songwriter and recording artist. In July, after his country cover reached No. 1, his team released a statement indicating that there were currently no scheduled performances with Chapman. However, they mentioned that Combs would be thrilled if the opportunity to perform with Chapman ever came up.
Even though she hasn't been in the spotlight much since the resurgence of the song, Chapman has made a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she mentioned that she was pleased for Combs and thankful for a new group of fans who are enjoying her song. Chapman also noted that she never thought her music would make it onto the country charts, but she feels honored to be included.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is given specifically to songwriters, and in this case, it was won by Chapman, making her the first Black woman to receive the CMA Song of the Year award as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but her message was read out loud from the stage after she won.
"I apologize for not being able to join you all this evening. It is a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs and especially thankful to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car'."
The song "Fast Car" by Combs has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammys this year. This nomination is his seventh at the ceremony, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.
