Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman Set to Wow Audiences with Grammy Performance of ‘Fast Car

  • by

According to a report from Variety, there is a possibility that Tracy Chapman will be making a rare public appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards, where she is expected to perform alongside Luke Combs.

According to insiders, Chapman and Luke Combs are set to perform together on stage. They will be singing "Fast Car," which was originally a folk-pop hit by Chapman in the late 1980s. The song tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Surprisingly, Combs included a cover of the song on his album "Gettin' Old" in 2023, which quickly became a hit on country radio.

If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it would be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed moments of the event. Sources say she has only performed in front of cameras three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.

Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform the song "Fast Car" with its original songwriter and recording artist. Despite his team stating that there are currently no plans for a collaboration with Chapman, they mentioned that he would be thrilled if the opportunity presented itself in the future.

Even though she has not been in the spotlight much since the song became popular again, Chapman has made a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached the top spot on the country charts, she mentioned that she was pleased for Combs and thankful for a new group of fans who are connecting with her song. She also mentioned that while she never anticipated being on the country charts, she is grateful for the recognition.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" received the Song of the Year award. This award is specifically for songwriters, so Tracy Chapman, the songwriter of the song, became the first Black woman to win the CMA Song of the Year as the sole writer. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.

"Apologies for not being able to attend tonight. It's a great honor for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years. I want to express my gratitude to the CMAs, as well as a special thank you to Luke and all the 'Fast Car' fans."

Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammy Awards. This nomination is his seventh at the Grammys, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.

The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
