Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman Set to Wow Fans with “Fast Car” Performance at 2024 Grammys

  • by

According to a report from Variety, there is a possibility that Tracy Chapman will make a rare public appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards to perform with Luke Combs. Chapman is not known for frequent public appearances, making this potential collaboration quite special.

According to insiders familiar with the situation, it has been reported by Variety that Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing "Fast Car" together on stage. "Fast Car" is a folk-pop hit from the late 1980s by Chapman that tells the story of a couple trying to break free from the cycle of poverty. The song was unexpectedly covered by Combs in 2023 on his Gettin' Old album, which propelled his version of "Fast Car" to the top of the country radio charts.

If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably a highlight of the night. Variety reports that she has only been on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.

However, Combs has been open about his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and singer. Despite the country cover reaching No. 1 in July, his team stated that there are currently no plans for a collaboration with Chapman. However, Combs would be thrilled if the opportunity to perform together ever came up.

Although she has mostly stayed out of the spotlight since the song became popular again, Chapman has made a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she mentioned that she was pleased for Combs and thankful for a new group of fans who are enjoying her song. She also mentioned that she never thought her song would be on the country charts, but she is grateful to be included.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is given specifically to songwriters, and in this case, it was won by Chapman. This made her the first Black woman to win the CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Even though Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.

"I regret not being able to be present tonight. It's a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since its release. Thank you to the CMAs and a heartfelt gratitude to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car.'"

Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammys this year. This nomination is his seventh at the ceremony. If he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.

The Grammy Awards for 2024 will be broadcasted from the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4th, 2024. The event will be shown on CBS and will also be available for live streaming on Paramount+.
