Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman Set to Wow Fans with ‘Fast Car’ Performance at the 2024 Grammy Awards

  • by

According to a report from Variety, it is rare to see Tracy Chapman in public these days, but she may make a special appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards where she will be performing alongside Luke Combs.

According to insiders, Chapman is set to perform "Fast Car" with Luke Combs at an upcoming event. "Fast Car" is a folk-pop hit from the late '80s that tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs covered the song in 2023 on his album "Gettin' Old," which helped the song reach the top of the country radio charts.

If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be a major surprise and probably one of the most discussed moments of the evening. According to Variety, she has only appeared on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.

However, Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. In July, after his country cover reached No. 1, his team released a statement stating that there were currently no plans for him to perform with Chapman, but he would be thrilled if the opportunity presented itself.

Although Chapman has mostly kept a low profile since the song "Fast Car" became popular again, she has made a few statements supporting Combs' success with the song. When the song reached number one on the country charts, she expressed her happiness for Combs and thanked a new group of fans for embracing her song. She mentioned that she never thought her song would be on the country charts, but she feels honored to be included.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This honor is specifically for the songwriters, so Tracy Chapman became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was read aloud from the stage after her win was announced.

"I regret that I couldn't attend tonight. It's a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since its first release. I am grateful to the CMAs and especially grateful to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car'."

The song "Fast Car" by Combs has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the upcoming Grammys. This nomination is Combs' seventh at the awards show. If he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.

The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
