According to a report from Variety, it has been suggested that Tracy Chapman, who doesn't frequently appear in public, may make a special appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards where she will perform alongside Luke Combs.
According to insiders familiar with the situation, Variety has revealed that Chapman will be performing with Luke Combs on stage to sing "Fast Car," which was originally a hit for Chapman in the late 1980s. The song tells the story of a couple trying to break free from the cycle of poverty. In 2023, Combs included a cover of "Fast Car" on his album Gettin' Old, which helped the song reach the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably a major highlight of the night. Variety reported that she has only been seen performing on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite his cover of the song reaching No. 1 in July, his team stated that there were no current plans for him to perform with Chapman. However, they mentioned that he would be thrilled if the opportunity did come up.
Although she has been mostly private about it, Chapman has expressed her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car". She mentioned being happy and grateful for the new fans who are enjoying her song as it reached the top spot on the country charts. Chapman also shared that she never anticipated being on the country charts, but she feels honored to be included.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, "Fast Car" was named Song of the Year. This award is specifically given to songwriters, so Tracy Chapman, the songwriter of the winning song, became the first Black woman to receive the CMA Song of the Year award as the sole writer. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was read aloud from the stage after her win was announced.

Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammy Awards this year. This nomination is his seventh at the awards show. If he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.
The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4, 2024. The event will be shown on CBS and will also be available for live streaming on Paramount+.
