Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman Set to Wow Fans with Grammys Performance of ‘Fast Car

  • by

According to a report from Variety, there is a possibility that Tracy Chapman will make a rare appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards to perform alongside Luke Combs.

According to sources familiar with the situation, Variety has revealed that Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing together on stage to sing "Fast Car," which was originally a popular folk-pop hit by Chapman in the late 1980s. The song tells the story of a couple trying to break free from the cycle of poverty. In 2023, Combs included a cover of the song on his album Gettin' Old, which helped propel his version of "Fast Car" to the top of the country radio charts.

If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it would be unexpected and probably a highlight of the night. Sources say she has only performed in front of cameras three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.

Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with its original songwriter and singer. Despite his cover of the song reaching No. 1 in July, his team stated that there were no current plans for him to perform with Chapman. However, they mentioned that he would be thrilled if the opportunity ever came up.

Although she has not been very visible in the public eye since the song's popularity increased, Chapman has released a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she mentioned that she was pleased for Combs and appreciative of a new group of fans enjoying her song. Chapman also mentioned that she never anticipated her song being on the country charts, but she feels honored to be part of that.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This prestigious award is given only to the songwriters, and in this case, it was won by Chapman. This marked a historic moment as Chapman became the first Black woman to win the CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.

"I regret that I couldn't attend the event tonight. It's a great privilege for my song to receive recognition 35 years since it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs, and I want to give a special thanks to Luke and all the fans of 'Fast Car'."

Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammys this year. This is his seventh nomination at the ceremony and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.

The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4, 2024. The event will be shown on CBS and will also be available for live streaming on Paramount+.
