Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman to Deliver Show-Stopping Performance of “Fast Car” at the 2024 Grammy Awards

  • by

According to a report from Variety, it has been announced that Luke Combs will be performing with Tracy Chapman at the Grammy Awards in 2024. Despite not making many public appearances recently, Chapman is expected to make an exception for this event.

According to insiders, Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing together on stage to sing "Fast Car," a popular folk-pop song from the late 1980s. The song tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his album Gettin' Old in 2023, which helped it reach the top of the country radio charts.

If Chapman ends up performing at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably a highlight of the night. Variety reports that she has only been on camera performing three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.

However, Combs has been open about his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite the country cover reaching No. 1 in July, his team stated that there were no current plans for a joint performance with Chapman. However, they mentioned that Combs would be thrilled if the opportunity to perform together ever presented itself.

Even though she has not been very visible in the public eye since the song became popular again, Chapman has made a few statements in support of Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she expressed her happiness for Combs and gratitude towards a new generation of fans who are enjoying her song. She mentioned that she never thought her song would be on the country charts, but she feels honored to be a part of it.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is specifically given to songwriters, so Tracy Chapman, the writer of the song, became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the only songwriter. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was read out loud on stage after her win was announced.

"I regret not being able to attend tonight. It is a great honor for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since its release. Thank you to the CMAs and a special shoutout to Luke and all the 'Fast Car' fans."

The song "Fast Car" by Combs has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammy Awards. This nomination is his seventh at the Grammys, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.

The Grammy Awards for 2024 will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4, 2024. The event will be shown on CBS and will also be available for streaming on Paramount+.
