According to a report from Variety, singer Tracy Chapman, who is not frequently seen in public, may make a special appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards where she is expected to perform alongside Luke Combs.
According to sources familiar with the situation, it has been reported by Variety that Chapman is set to perform "Fast Car" with Luke Combs during a live performance. "Fast Car" is a folk-pop hit from the late 1980s by Chapman that tells the story of a couple trying to break free from the cycle of poverty. Interestingly, Combs included a cover of the song on his Gettin' Old album in 2023, which helped propel the song to the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman does decide to perform at the Grammys, it would be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed moments of the event. Reports say she has only been seen performing in front of cameras three times since 2009, which was the last year of her latest tour.
Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with Tracy Chapman, the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite his country cover of the song reaching No. 1, his team stated in July that there were no current plans for a collaboration with Chapman. However, they mentioned that he would be thrilled if the opportunity to perform together ever presented itself.
Although she has mostly avoided public attention regarding the song's comeback, Chapman has released a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached the top spot on the country charts, she mentioned that she was pleased for Combs and thankful for a new group of fans who are enjoying her song. She also mentioned that she never anticipated being on the country charts, but she feels honored to be included.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is given specifically to songwriters, and in this case, it went to Chapman. This made her the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.
I regret that I couldn't attend the event tonight. It means a lot to me that my song is being acknowledged after 35 years since it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs and especially thankful to Luke and all the fans of "Fast Car."
Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammy Awards this year. This is his seventh nomination at the ceremony, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.
The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
