Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman to Perform “Fast Car” at 2024 Grammys: A Surprising Collaboration in the Making

  • by

According to a report from Variety, there is a possibility that Tracy Chapman will make a rare appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards to perform alongside Luke Combs. Chapman is not known for making many public appearances these days.

According to insiders, Variety has reported that Chapman will be joining Luke Combs on stage to perform "Fast Car," a folk-pop hit from the late '80s that tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. The song was unexpectedly included in Combs' discography in 2023, when he covered it on his album Gettin' Old and saw it become a chart-topping country radio hit.

If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it would be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed moments of the event. Reports suggest that she has only been seen performing in front of cameras three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.

However, Combs has openly expressed his desire to sing "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and performer. While his team stated that there are currently no arrangements for a performance with Chapman, they mentioned that he would be thrilled if the chance to perform together ever came up.

Although she has not been very visible in the media since the song gained popularity again, Chapman has made a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car". When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she mentioned that she was pleased for Combs and appreciative of a new group of fans who have embraced her song. She also stated that she was surprised to see her song on the country charts, but felt honored to be included.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is given specifically to songwriters, so Tracy Chapman, the songwriter of the song, became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole writer. Even though Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.

I regret not being able to join you all tonight. It's a great honor for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since it was first released. I want to express my gratitude to the CMAs and give a special shoutout to Luke and all the fans of "Fast Car."

This year, Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammys. This nomination is his seventh at the awards ceremony. If he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.

The Grammy Awards in 2024 will be shown from the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4th. The event will be aired on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
