Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman to Perform ‘Fast Car’ at the Grammys: A Historic Collaboration and Potential Grammy Win

  • by

According to a report from Variety, it has been suggested that Tracy Chapman, who is not frequently seen in public, may make a special appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards where she will perform with Luke Combs.

According to sources familiar with the artists, Variety has reported that Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing together on stage. They will be singing "Fast Car," a popular folk-pop song from the late 1980s by Chapman, which tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his album Gettin' Old in 2023, which helped the song reach the top of the country radio charts.

Should Chapman decide to perform at the Grammys, it would be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed moments of the evening. Variety reports that she has only been on camera performing three times since her last tour in 2009.

Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite the country cover reaching No. 1 in July, his team stated that there are currently no plans for him to perform with Chapman. However, they mentioned that he would be thrilled if the opportunity to do so ever came up.

Even though she has not been very visible in the public eye since the song became popular again, Chapman has released a few statements showing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached the top spot on the country charts, she expressed happiness for Combs and thanked a new generation of fans for embracing her song. Chapman mentioned that she never thought she would be on the country charts, but she feels honored to be there now.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This recognition is given specifically to the songwriters, and in this case, it was awarded to Chapman, marking her as the first Black woman to win the CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but she did send a message to be read out loud from the stage after her win was declared.

"I regret that I couldn't join you all this evening. It is a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs and especially to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car'."

Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammy Awards. This nomination is his seventh at the ceremony, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.

The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4, 2024. The event will be shown on CBS and will also be available for live streaming on Paramount+.
