Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman to Perform Iconic Duet “Fast Car” at the 2024 Grammy Awards: A Historic Moment in Music

  • by

According to a report from Variety, Luke Combs is expected to perform with Tracy Chapman at the Grammys in 2024. Although Tracy Chapman is not known for making many public appearances, she may make an exception for this event.

According to sources familiar with the musicians, Variety has stated that Chapman will be performing "Fast Car" on stage with Luke Combs. The song, originally a hit for Chapman in the late 1980s, tells the story of a couple trying to break out of poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his album "Gettin' Old" in 2023, which helped it reach the top of the country radio charts.

If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be a significant and unexpected moment that will likely be a highlight of the evening. Reports from Variety indicate that she has only appeared on camera three times since 2009, after finishing her last tour.

However, Combs has been open about his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. After his country cover reached No. 1 in July, his team announced that there were no immediate plans for a performance with Chapman, but they expressed excitement about the possibility in the future.

Although she has mostly stayed away from the public eye since the song regained popularity, Chapman has released a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car". She mentioned feeling happy for Combs and grateful for a new group of fans who are enjoying her song. Chapman also shared that she was surprised to see her song on the country charts but feels honored to be included.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This prestigious honor is given specifically to songwriters, which meant that Chapman became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole writer of the song. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but she did send a message to be read out loud from the stage after her win was revealed.

"I regret not being able to attend tonight. It's a great honor for my song to be acknowledged after 35 years since it was first released. Thank you to the CMAs and a special shoutout to Luke and all the fans of 'Fast Car'."

Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammy Awards. This is his seventh nomination at the event, and if he receives the award, it will be his first Grammy win.

The Grammy Awards in 2024 will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4th. The event will be shown on CBS and available for live streaming on Paramount+.
