According to a report from Variety, there is a possibility that Tracy Chapman will make a rare public appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards where she will reportedly perform with Luke Combs.
According to insiders familiar with the situation, Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing "Fast Car" together. The song, originally a hit for Chapman in the late 1980s, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his Gettin' Old album in 2023, which helped propel it to the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed moments of the evening. Sources say she has only appeared in front of cameras three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
However, Combs has openly expressed his desire to sing "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and singer. In July, after his country cover reached No. 1, his team released a statement stating that there were no current plans for him to perform with Chapman, but he would be thrilled if the opportunity came up.
Although she has not been very visible in the media since the song became popular again, Chapman has made a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." She mentioned feeling happy and grateful for the new fans who have embraced her song after it reached No. 1 on the country charts. Chapman also stated that she never anticipated her song being on the country charts, but she is thankful for the recognition.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This accolade is given to songwriters, and in this case, it went to Chapman, who became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was read aloud from the stage after her victory was revealed.
I regret that I couldn't attend the event tonight. It means a lot to me that my song has been acknowledged after 35 years since its release. I am grateful to the CMAs, Luke, and all the fans of "Fast Car" for their support.
"Fast Car" by Combs has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammys. This is his seventh nomination at the awards show, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy win.
The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
