According to a report from Variety, there is a possibility that Tracy Chapman will make an appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards, where she may perform alongside Luke Combs. Chapman is known for rarely making public appearances.
According to insiders, Variety has revealed that Chapman will be joining Luke Combs on stage to perform "Fast Car," a popular folk-pop song from the late '80s. The song tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Surprisingly, Combs included a cover of "Fast Car" on his Gettin' Old album in 2023, which helped the song reach the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably a highlight of the night. Reports suggest she has only appeared in front of cameras three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Following the country cover's success, his team announced that there were no immediate plans for a joint performance with Chapman, but they would be thrilled if the opportunity presented itself.
Even though she has not been very visible in public discussions about the revival of the song, Chapman has expressed her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car" through a few statements. When the song reached the top spot on the country charts, she mentioned that she was pleased for Combs and appreciative of a younger audience embracing her music. She also mentioned that she was surprised but honored to see her song on the country charts.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is given specifically to songwriters, so Tracy Chapman received the honor as the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.
"I regret not being able to attend tonight. It is a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since its release. I am grateful to the CMAs, Luke, and all the 'Fast Car' fans."
Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammy Awards. This nomination is his seventh at the ceremony, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.
The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and available for live streaming on Paramount+.
