According to a report from Variety, there is a possibility that Tracy Chapman will make a rare appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards where she will perform alongside Luke Combs.
According to sources familiar with the artists, Variety has stated that Chapman is set to perform "Fast Car" with Luke Combs during a live performance. "Fast Car" is a popular folk-pop song from the late 1980s that tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his album "Gettin' Old" in 2023, which helped propel it to the top of the country radio charts.
It would be a major shock if Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, and it is expected to be a highly discussed moment of the evening. Reports indicate that she has only been seen performing on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
However, Combs has openly expressed his desire to sing "Fast Car" alongside the original songwriter and performer. In July, after his country cover reached number 1, his team released a statement confirming that there were no current plans for a joint performance with Chapman, but they also mentioned that Combs would be enthusiastic if the chance to perform together ever presented itself.
Even though she has not been very visible to the public during the song's comeback, Chapman has released a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she mentioned that she was pleased for Combs and appreciative of a new group of fans who are enjoying her song. She also stated that she did not anticipate being on the country charts, but she feels honored to be included.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" received the Song of the Year award. This award is given specifically to songwriters, so Tracy Chapman, the songwriter, became the first Black woman to win the CMA Song of the Year as the sole writer. Even though Chapman was not present at the ceremony, she did send a message to be read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.
"I regret that I couldn't attend tonight. It's a great honor for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since it was first released. Thank you to the CMAs and a big thank you to Luke and all the fans of 'Fast Car.'"
The song "Fast Car" by Combs has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the upcoming Grammy Awards. This nomination is his seventh at the ceremony, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.
The 2024 Grammy Awards ceremony will be held at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
