Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman to Wow Fans with ‘Fast Car’ Performance at the 2024 Grammy Awards

  • by

According to a report from Variety, there is a possibility that Tracy Chapman will make a rare appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards to perform alongside Luke Combs. Chapman is not frequently seen in public these days.

According to sources familiar with the artists, Variety has reported that Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing "Fast Car" together on stage. "Fast Car" is a folk-pop hit from the late '80s by Chapman, telling the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his Gettin' Old album in 2023, which became a hit on the country radio charts.

If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed moments of the evening. Sources say she has only appeared in front of cameras three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.

Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite his cover of the song reaching No. 1 in July, his team stated that there were no current plans for a joint performance with Chapman. However, they mentioned that Combs would be enthusiastic if the chance to perform together ever came up.

Although she has mostly remained private about the song's resurgence, Chapman has made a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, Chapman mentioned that she was pleased for Combs and thankful for a new group of fans who enjoy her song. She also mentioned that she did not anticipate being on the country charts, but feels honored to be included.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is given to songwriters, and in this case, it was won by Chapman, who became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.

"I regret not being able to attend tonight. It's a great privilege to have my song acknowledged again after 35 years since it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs and especially to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car'."

Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammys this year. This is the seventh time he has been nominated for an award at the ceremony. If he wins, it will be his first Grammy win.

The Grammy Awards for 2024 will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4th. The event will be shown on CBS and will also be available for live streaming on Paramount+.
