According to a report from Variety, Luke Combs is expected to perform with Tracy Chapman at the upcoming Grammy Awards in 2024. Although Tracy Chapman doesn't usually appear in public, she might make an exception for this event.
According to sources familiar with the artists, Variety has stated that Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing "Fast Car" together. The song, originally a folk-pop hit by Chapman in the late '80s, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his album Gettin' Old in 2023, which helped propel it to the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed moments of the evening. According to Variety, she has only appeared on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
However, Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. His team stated in July that while there are currently no plans for a performance with Chapman, Combs would be enthusiastic if the opportunity presented itself.
Even though she has not been very visible to the public during the song's comeback, Chapman has made a few statements showing her support for Combs and his success with "Fast Car." She expressed her happiness for Combs and appreciation for a new group of fans who are enjoying her song. Chapman mentioned that she never anticipated being on the country charts, but she feels honored to be included.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This prestigious accolade is given to songwriters, and in this case, it was given to Chapman. This made her the first Black woman to win the CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.
"I regret that I couldn't join you all this evening. It's truly a privilege for my song to receive recognition again after 35 years since it was first released. Thank you to the CMAs and a special thanks to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car'."
Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammy Awards. This nomination is his seventh at the award ceremony and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy win.
The 2024 Grammy Awards will be broadcasted from Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4, 2024. The event will be shown on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
