Tracy Chapman and Luke Combs Set to Perform ‘Fast Car’ at the 2024 Grammy Awards: A Historic Moment in Music History

  • by

According to a report from Variety, there is a possibility that Tracy Chapman will be making a rare appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards to perform with Luke Combs. Chapman is known for not frequently appearing in public events, making this potential collaboration an exciting prospect for fans.

According to insiders familiar with the situation, Variety has stated that Chapman will be joining Luke Combs on stage to sing "Fast Car," a popular folk-pop song from the late 1980s that talks about a couple trying to break free from ongoing poverty. The song was unexpectedly covered by Combs in 2023 and became a hit on country radio charts after being included on his Gettin' Old album.

If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed moments of the event. Reports from Variety suggest that she has only been seen performing on camera three times since 2009, which was the end of her last tour.

However, Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with its original songwriter and singer. Despite the country cover reaching No. 1 in July, his team stated that there were currently no plans for him to perform with Chapman, but he would be thrilled if the opportunity presented itself.

Even though she has been mostly keeping a low profile since the song gained popularity again, Chapman has made a few statements showing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she expressed her happiness for Combs and appreciation for a new group of fans who are enjoying her music. She also mentioned that she never imagined being on the country charts, but she feels honored to be included.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, "Fast Car" was chosen as the Song of the Year. This award is given specifically to the songwriters, and in this case, it was awarded to Chapman. This made her the first Black woman to win the CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the event, but she did send a message to be read out loud on her behalf after her win was declared.

"I apologize for not being able to attend tonight. It is a great honor for my song to be acknowledged after 35 years since it was first released. Thank you to the CMAs and a big thank you to Luke and all the fans of 'Fast Car'."

Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammys this year. This nomination is his seventh at the awards show. If he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.

The Grammy Awards in 2024 will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4th. The event will be shown on CBS and will also be available for live streaming on Paramount+.
