According to a report from Variety, there is a possibility that Tracy Chapman will make a rare appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards, where she will potentially perform with Luke Combs.
According to insiders familiar with the situation, Chapman and Luke Combs are set to perform together on stage. They will be singing "Fast Car," which is Chapman's popular folk-pop song from the late 1980s about a couple trying to break free from poverty. The song was unexpectedly included in Combs' music in 2023, when he covered it on his album "Gettin' Old" and it became a hit on country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed parts of the event. Reports say that she has only been seen performing on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with its original songwriter and singer. Although his team released a statement in July stating that there were no current plans for a collaboration with Chapman, they mentioned that Combs would be thrilled if the opportunity presented itself in the future.
Although she has mostly maintained a low profile since the song gained popularity again, Chapman has made a few statements showing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she expressed her happiness for Combs and appreciation for a new group of fans enjoying her song. She mentioned that she didn't anticipate being on the country charts, but she is proud to be there.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is given specifically to the writers of the song, and in this case, it was given to Chapman. This made her the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.
"I regret not being able to join you all tonight. It is a great privilege for my song to receive recognition again, 35 years after it was first released. I want to express my gratitude to the CMAs, and give a special shoutout to Luke and all the fans of 'Fast Car'."
Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammy Awards. This nomination is his seventh at the event, and if he is successful, it will be his first Grammy win.
The Grammy Awards in 2024 will be shown from the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and available for live streaming on Paramount+.
