Walmart’s Bold Move: Expanding ‘Large-Format’ Stores and Adding Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

Walmart is expanding its presence by opening larger stores and installing electric vehicle charging stations. They have a strong strategy in place to expand their store network and improve existing locations.

According to CNBC, the company plans to construct or transform over 150 large stores in the United States within the next five years. The Associated Press notes that Walmart has not opened any new stores in the last three years.

What does a Walmart store with a larger design look like? Walmart has released press images showcasing the Supercenter design for their planned "large-format" stores. However, the company has not disclosed the specific cities where these stores will be located.

Walmart announced that they will be implementing their "Store of the Future" concept in certain locations, which will feature more displays and QR codes for customers to scan for more information about products. Prior to this announcement, the company was already in the process of renovating 650 locations to include this concept.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Walmart president and CEO John Furner expressed that the company's investments in labor, supplies, and tax revenue benefit the communities they operate in.

CNBC reported that the company chose not to disclose the price of the stores.

Walmart has stated that their new stores will prioritize sustainability. These locations will feature energy-efficient lighting and equipment to reduce their environmental impact.

Aside from focusing on sustainability initiatives within its stores, Walmart is also planning to improve its parking lot. The company announced intentions to install fast-charging stations for electric cars.

According to CNBC, Walmart has over 4,600 stores in the United States and has a workforce of nearly 1.6 million employees.
