Walmart’s Expansion: New ‘Large-Format’ Stores and Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

  • by

Walmart is expanding their presence by opening more large stores and adding electric vehicle charging stations to some of their current locations.

According to CNBC, the company plans to either construct or transform over 150 "large-format" stores throughout the United States within the next five years. The Associated Press stated that Walmart has not opened any new stores within the last three years.

Walmart has released press images of its Supercenter design for their upcoming "large-format" stores. The cities where these stores will be located have not been announced yet.

Walmart announced that their locations will feature the "Store of the Future" concept, which includes more displays and QR codes for customers to scan for extra product details. The company was already in the process of renovating 650 more locations to include this concept before making the announcement on Wednesday.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Walmart president and CEO John Furner highlighted the significant investment the company has made in labor, supplies, and tax revenue in various communities. These investments have resulted in benefits for the local areas.

CNBC reported that the company chose not to disclose the price of the stores.

Walmart is planning to build new stores with sustainability in mind, focusing on energy-efficient lighting and equipment throughout the locations.

Aside from focusing on sustainability initiatives within its stores, Walmart is planning to make changes to its parking lot. Specifically, the company announced intentions to install fast-charging stations for electric cars.

Walmart is currently working on creating a nationwide network of affordable electric vehicle fast-charging stations in order to make owning an electric vehicle more convenient and accessible for both Walmart customers and employees.

According to CNBC, Walmart has over 4,600 stores across the United States and has a workforce of nearly 1.6 million employees.
