Walmart’s Expansion: New ‘Large-Format’ Stores and Electric Vehicle Charging Stations – A Look Into the Future of Retail

  • by

Walmart is expanding by adding more large stores and installing electric vehicle charging stations. The company has a strong strategy to grow their store presence and enhance existing locations.

CNBC stated that the company plans to construct or transform over 150 "large-format" stores throughout the United States within the next five years. As per the Associated Press, Walmart has not opened any new stores in the last three years.

What does a Walmart store with a larger format look like? Walmart has shared press images of its Supercenter design for these planned stores, but has not disclosed the locations of where they will be built.

Walmart announced that certain locations will feature their new "Store of the Future" concept, which includes more displays and QR codes for customers to scan for more information about products. The company was already in the process of remodeling 650 other locations to incorporate this concept before making the announcement on Wednesday.

Walmart president and CEO John Furner stated on Wednesday that the investments made by Walmart in labor, supplies, and tax revenue amount to millions of dollars, benefiting the communities where Walmart operates.

CNBC reported that the company chose not to disclose the expenses associated with the stores.

Walmart has revealed that its new stores will prioritize sustainability in their design. These locations will feature energy-efficient lighting and equipment to reduce energy consumption.

Apart from focusing on sustainability practices within its stores, Walmart is also planning to renovate its parking lot by installing fast-charging stations for electric cars.

Walmart is in the process of creating a network of affordable electric vehicle fast-charging stations across the country, in hopes of making it easier and more convenient for Walmart customers and employees to own and use electric vehicles.

According to CNBC, Walmart has over 4,600 stores in the United States and has a workforce of nearly 1.6 million employees.
