Walmart’s Expansion Plan: ‘Large-Format’ Stores and Electric Vehicle Charging Stations – A Look into the Retail Giant’s Future

  • by

Walmart is planning to expand their stores by adding larger locations and also adding electric vehicle charging stations. They have a strong strategy for expanding their retail presence.

According to CNBC, the company plans to either construct new or transform over 150 "large-format" stores throughout the United States within the next five years. The Associated Press noted that Walmart has not opened any new stores in the last three years.

What does a Walmart store with a 'large-format' design look like? Walmart has shared press images of its Supercenter design for these planned stores, but has not disclosed the specific cities where they will be located.

Walmart announced that certain locations will feature their new "Store of the Future" concept, which includes more displays and QR codes for customers to scan and access additional product information. Before this announcement, the retail giant was already in the process of remodeling 650 more locations to incorporate this concept.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Walmart president and CEO John Furner highlighted the significant capital investment in labor, supplies, and tax revenue made by the company, which ultimately benefits the communities they serve.

CNBC reported that the company chose not to disclose the price of the stores.

Walmart has stated that their new stores will prioritize sustainability in their design. This will include the use of energy-efficient lighting and equipment throughout the locations.

Apart from focusing on sustainability initiatives indoors, Walmart is also planning to make changes to its parking lot. The company has announced intentions to install quick-charging stations for electric cars.

Walmart is planning to create a nationwide network of affordable electric vehicle charging stations to make it easier for customers and employees to own and use electric vehicles. CEO Furner mentioned this initiative as part of their efforts to make EV ownership more convenient and accessible for Walmart shoppers and staff.

According to CNBC, Walmart has over 4,600 stores in the United States and has a workforce of almost 1.6 million employees.
