Walmart’s Expansion Plans: More ‘Large-Format’ Stores and Electric Vehicle Charging Stations on the Horizon

  • by

Walmart is expanding their presence by opening new large stores and installing electric vehicle charging stations at some of their current locations.

According to CNBC, the company plans to create over 150 new "large-format" stores in the United States within the next five years. The Associated Press notes that Walmart has not opened any new stores within the last three years.

Walmart has released images of its Supercenter design for new "large-format" stores, but has not disclosed the specific locations of these stores yet.

Walmart announced that they will be implementing their "Store of the Future" concept in certain locations. This concept includes more displays and QR codes for customers to scan for more information about products. Before this announcement, Walmart was already in the process of renovating 650 more locations to include this concept.

Walmart president and CEO John Furner stated that the company's investments in labor, supplies, and tax revenue amount to millions of dollars and bring benefits to the communities they operate in. This was announced in a statement released on Wednesday.

CNBC reported that the company chose not to disclose the price of the stores.

The new Walmart stores will prioritize sustainability by incorporating energy-efficient lighting and equipment in their design.

Aside from their sustainability initiatives indoors, Walmart is also planning to make changes to their parking lot. They have announced intentions to install quick-charging stations for electric cars.

Walmart is planning to create a network of inexpensive electric vehicle charging stations across the country to make it easier and more accessible for customers and employees to own electric vehicles. This change is aimed at improving convenience for those who shop at Walmart.

According to CNBC, Walmart has over 4,600 stores in the United States and has a workforce of almost 1.6 million employees.
