Grammys 2024: Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman to Perform ‘Fast Car’ Together – A Historic Moment in Music

  • by

According to a report from Variety, there is a possibility that Tracy Chapman will make a rare public appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards where she will potentially perform with Luke Combs.

According to sources familiar with the artists, Variety has reported that Chapman will be joining Luke Combs on stage to sing "Fast Car," which is a folk-pop hit from the late 1980s about a couple trying to break free from repeated poverty. The song was unexpectedly included in Combs' music in 2023, when he covered it on his album Gettin' Old and it became a hit on country radio.

If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed moments of the event. Sources say she has only been seen on camera performing three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.

However, Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite the country cover reaching No. 1 in July, his team stated that there are currently no plans for him to perform with Chapman. However, they mentioned that he would be thrilled if the opportunity ever presented itself.

Chapman, although mostly keeping a low profile during the song's comeback, has made a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she mentioned that she was pleased for Combs and thankful for a new group of fans enjoying her song. She also mentioned that she had not anticipated being on the country charts, but was happy to be included.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This accolade is given to songwriters only, and in this case, it was given to Chapman. This made her the first Black woman to win the CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the event, but a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.

"I regret not being able to attend tonight. It is a great privilege for my song to receive recognition after 35 years since its release. I am grateful to the CMAs, Luke, and all the fans of 'Fast Car' for their support."

Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the upcoming Grammy Awards. This nomination is his seventh overall, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy Award.

The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
