Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman Set to Perform Together at the 2024 Grammy Awards: A Historic Collaboration

  • by

According to a report from Variety, it is said that Tracy Chapman, who is not frequently seen in public, may make a special appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards where she will perform with Luke Combs.

According to insiders familiar with the situation, Chapman is set to perform alongside Luke Combs at an upcoming event. They will be singing "Fast Car," which was originally a hit for Chapman in the late 1980s and tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Surprisingly, Combs included a cover of the song on his album "Gettin' Old" in 2023, propelling it to the top of the country radio charts.

If Chapman does decide to perform at the Grammys, it would be a major shock and probably one of the most discussed moments of the event. As per Variety, she has only been seen performing on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.

Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite his team stating that there are currently no plans for a collaboration with Chapman, they mentioned that he would be thrilled if the opportunity presented itself in the future.

Although she has chosen to remain mostly private about the song's sudden popularity, Chapman has released a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached the top spot on the country charts, she mentioned that she was pleased for Combs and thankful for a new group of fans who are enjoying her song. Chapman also mentioned that she was surprised to see her song on the country charts, but she feels honored to be included.

At the 2023 CMA Awards in November, "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This prestigious honor is given specifically to songwriters, and this time it was Chapman who received it, marking her as the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.

I apologize for not being able to attend tonight. It is a great honor for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs and especially to Luke and all the fans of 'Fast Car.'

Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the upcoming Grammys. This nomination is his seventh at the awards show, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.

The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
