According to a report from Variety, Tracy Chapman, who doesn't usually make public appearances, is likely to perform with Luke Combs at the 2024 Grammy Awards.
According to insiders familiar with the situation, Variety has reported that Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing "Fast Car" together. This song, originally a hit for Chapman in the late 1980s, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from a cycle of poverty. Surprisingly, Combs included a cover of the song on his 2023 album "Gettin' Old," propelling his version of "Fast Car" to the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be a major surprise and probably one of the most talked-about highlights of the event. Variety reports that she has only performed in front of cameras three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with its original writer and singer. Despite his cover of the song reaching No. 1 in July, his team announced that he did not currently have any plans to perform with Chapman. However, they mentioned that he would be thrilled if the chance to perform together ever came up.
Even though she has not been very visible in the public eye during the song's comeback, Chapman has released a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached the top spot on the country charts, she mentioned that she was pleased for Combs and appreciative of a new group of fans enjoying her song. She also mentioned that she did not anticipate her song being on the country charts, but she feels honored to be there.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" received the Song of the Year award. This award is specifically for songwriters, so it was given to Chapman, making her the first Black woman to win the CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the event, but she did send a message to be read on stage after her win was announced.
"I apologize for not being able to attend tonight. It's a great honor for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs, Luke, and all the fans of 'Fast Car'."
Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammy Awards. This nomination is his seventh overall at the ceremony. If he were to win, it would be his first Grammy award.
