Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman Set to Wow Audience with ‘Fast Car’ Performance at 2024 Grammy Awards

  • by

According to a report from Variety, Tracy Chapman, who usually doesn't make many public appearances, is expected to perform at the 2024 Grammy Awards alongside Luke Combs.

According to insiders familiar with the performers, Variety has stated that Chapman and Luke Combs will perform "Fast Car" together on stage. This song was originally a popular folk-pop hit by Chapman in the late 1980s, telling the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. In 2023, Combs included a cover of "Fast Car" on his album Gettin' Old, which brought the song to the top of the country radio charts.

Should Chapman decide to perform at the Grammys, it would be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed moments of the evening. As reported by Variety, she has only appeared on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.

Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Even though his team stated that there are currently no plans for a collaboration with Chapman, they mentioned that he would be thrilled if the opportunity presented itself.

Chapman has not been very public about the renewed popularity of the song, but she has made a few supportive statements about Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she expressed her happiness for Combs and thanked the new fans who have embraced her song. She mentioned that she never thought her song would be on the country charts, but she feels honored to see it there.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" received the Song of the Year award. This award is given specifically to the songwriters, and in this case, it was presented to Chapman. This made her the first Black woman to win the CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Even though Chapman was not present at the ceremony, she did send a message to be read out from the stage after her win was announced.

"I regret that I couldn't attend the event tonight. It's really special for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs and want to give a special thanks to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car.'"

Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammys this year. This is his seventh nomination at the ceremony and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.

The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and also available for live streaming on Paramount+.
