Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman Set to Wow Audience with “Fast Car” Performance at the Grammys

  • by

According to a report from Variety, there are rumors that Tracy Chapman may make a rare appearance at the Grammy Awards in 2024, where she could potentially perform with Luke Combs.

According to insiders familiar with the situation, Variety has reported that Chapman and Luke Combs will perform "Fast Car" together on stage. The song, originally a hit for Chapman in the late 1980s, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his Gettin' Old album in 2023, which helped propel his version of "Fast Car" to the top of the country radio charts.

If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably a highly discussed moment of the event. Variety reported that she has only been on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.

Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite his country cover reaching No. 1 in July, his team stated that there are currently no plans for him to perform with Chapman. However, they mentioned that he would be thrilled if the opportunity ever came up.

Even though Chapman has been mostly quiet about the renewed popularity of the song, she has released a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." She mentioned feeling happy and grateful for a new generation of fans who have embraced her song after it reached No. 1 on the country charts. Chapman also expressed surprise at finding her song on the country charts but said she felt honored to be included.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" received the Song of the Year award. This award is given specifically to songwriters, so the honor was given to Chapman, who became the first Black woman to win the CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.

"I regret not being able to attend tonight. It is a great honor to have my song acknowledged after 35 years since it was first released. I want to express my gratitude to the CMAs, as well as a special thank you to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car'."

Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammys this year. This nomination is his seventh at the awards ceremony. If he wins, it will be his first Grammy.

The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4, 2024. The event will be shown on CBS and will also be available for live streaming on Paramount+.
