Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman Set to Wow Audience with Grammy Performance of “Fast Car

  • by

According to a report from Variety, there is speculation that Tracy Chapman may make a rare appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards to perform alongside Luke Combs. Chapman is known for keeping a low profile, so this potential appearance is generating excitement among fans.

According to insiders, Variety has reported that Chapman will be joining Luke Combs in a performance of "Fast Car," Chapman's popular folk-pop song from the late 1980s. The song tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Surprisingly, Combs included a cover of the song on his Gettin' Old album in 2023, which helped it reach the top of the country radio charts.

If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed moments of the evening. According to Variety, she has only appeared on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.

Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with its original songwriter and recording artist. Despite his country cover of the song reaching No. 1, his team stated in July that there were no current plans for a joint performance with Chapman. However, they mentioned that Combs would be thrilled if the opportunity to perform together ever presented itself.

Even though Chapman has mostly kept a low profile since the song gained popularity again, she has made a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she mentioned that she was pleased for Combs and thankful for a new group of fans enjoying her song. She also stated that she was surprised to see her song on the country charts, but she felt honored to be included.

During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This prestigious honor is given to the songwriters, and in this case, it was given to Chapman. She became the first Black woman to win the CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Chapman was not present at the ceremony, but a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.

"I regret that I couldn't attend the event tonight. It's a great honor for my song to receive recognition again after 35 years since its first release. I want to express my gratitude to the CMAs, as well as a special thanks to Luke and all the fans of 'Fast Car'."

The song "Fast Car" by Combs has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammy Awards this year. This is his seventh nomination at the ceremony and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.

The Grammy Awards in 2024 will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4th. The event will be shown on CBS and can also be streamed live on Paramount+.
