According to a report from Variety, Luke Combs is set to perform with Tracy Chapman at the upcoming Grammy Awards in 2024. Tracy Chapman, who usually stays out of the public eye, is rumored to be making an exception for this event.
According to insiders familiar with the artists, Variety has revealed that Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing together on stage to sing "Fast Car," which was a popular folk-pop song by Chapman in the late 1980s. The song tells the story of a couple trying to break free from recurring poverty. Combs included a cover of this song on his album Gettin' Old in 2023, which unexpectedly became a hit on country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed moments of the evening. Reportedly, she has only been seen performing on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
Combs has expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with its original songwriter and recording artist. Despite his country cover of the song reaching No. 1, his team stated in July that there were no current plans for a collaboration with Chapman. However, they mentioned that Combs would be thrilled if the opportunity to perform together ever presented itself.
Even though she has not been in the spotlight much since the song became popular again, Chapman has released a few statements showing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." She expressed happiness for Combs and appreciation for a new generation of fans who are enjoying her song. Chapman admitted she never thought she would be on the country charts, but she feels honored to be there now.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is given specifically to songwriters, so Tracy Chapman, the writer of the song, became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as a sole songwriter. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, she did send a message to be read on her behalf after her win was announced.
"I regret that I couldn't join you all this evening. It's a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since its first release. It's amazing," the message stated. "I want to express my gratitude to the CMAs and a heartfelt thank you to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car.'"
Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammy Awards this year. This nomination brings his total number of Grammy nominations to seven, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.
The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4th, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and available for live streaming on Paramount+.
