According to a report from Variety, there is a possibility that Tracy Chapman may make a rare public appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards where she will potentially perform with Luke Combs.
According to insiders, Variety has reported that Chapman will be performing "Fast Car" on stage with Luke Combs. The song, originally released in the late 1980s by Chapman, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his Gettin' Old album in 2023, which helped the song reach the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will come as a big surprise and will probably be one of the most buzzed-about moments of the evening. Variety reports that she has only been seen performing on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and performer. Despite his country cover reaching No. 1, his team stated in July that there were no immediate plans for a collaboration with Chapman. However, they mentioned that Combs would be thrilled if the opportunity ever presented itself.
Although she has not been very visible in public discussions about the song's popularity, Chapman has made a few comments supporting Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she expressed her happiness for Combs and appreciation for a new group of fans who are enjoying her song. She mentioned that she did not anticipate being on the country charts, but she feels honored to be included.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" received the Song of the Year award. This award is given specifically to songwriters, and Tracy Chapman was the recipient, becoming the first Black woman to win the CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.
"Unfortunately, I couldn't attend the event tonight. It's a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs and especially to Luke and all the fans of 'Fast Car'."
The song "Fast Car" by Combs has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammy Awards. This nomination is his seventh at the ceremony, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy win.
