According to sources familiar with the situation, Variety has reported that Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing "Fast Car" together on stage. "Fast Car" is a folk-pop hit from the late 1980s by Chapman that tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. The song was unexpectedly covered by Combs in 2023 and became a hit on the country radio charts after being included on his album Gettin' Old.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably a highlight of the event. Sources say she has only been seen performing on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
However, Combs has been open about his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite the country cover becoming a No. 1 hit in July, his team stated that there were no current plans for him to collaborate with Chapman on stage, but he would be enthusiastic if the opportunity presented itself.
Despite maintaining a low profile during the song's comeback, Chapman has released a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached the top spot on the country charts, she mentioned that she was pleased for Combs and appreciative of a new group of fans enjoying her song. Chapman also mentioned that she never anticipated being on the country charts, but she feels honored to be there.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is specifically for the songwriters, so it was given to Chapman, who became the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Although Chapman was not at the ceremony, she did provide a message to be read out loud from the stage after her win was declared.
"I regret not being able to join you all this evening. It is a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs and especially to Luke and all the supporters of 'Fast Car'."
Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammy Awards. This nomination is his seventh overall at the event. If he ends up winning, it will be his first Grammy award.
