According to a report from Variety, Tracy Chapman, who doesn't frequently make public appearances, may perform at the 2024 Grammy Awards alongside Luke Combs.
According to insiders, Variety has reported that Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing "Fast Car" together. The song, originally released by Chapman in the late 1980s, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his Gettin' Old album in 2023, which helped propel it to the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be a major surprise and probably one of the most discussed moments of the event. As reported by Variety, she has only appeared on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. Despite the country cover's success, there are currently no plans for him to share the stage with Chapman. However, he would be thrilled if the opportunity presented itself in the future.
Chapman has mostly stayed away from the spotlight after the song became popular again, but she did release a few statements showing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." She expressed her happiness for Combs and thanked the new fans who have embraced her song. Chapman also mentioned that she was surprised to see her song on the country charts, but she feels honored to be included.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This prestigious award is given to songwriters, and in this case, it went to Chapman, making her the first Black woman to win CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, she did send a message to be read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.
