According to a report from Variety, Luke Combs is set to perform alongside Tracy Chapman at the upcoming Grammy Awards in 2024. Despite not frequently appearing in public, Tracy Chapman is considering making an exception for this event.
According to insiders, Variety has reported that Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing "Fast Car" together on stage. This song, originally released in the late 1980s by Chapman, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Surprisingly, Combs included a cover of the song on his album Gettin' Old in 2023, which helped propel it to the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman does decide to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed moments of the evening. According to Variety, she has only been seen performing on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with the original songwriter and recording artist. His team stated in July that while he currently has no plans to collaborate with Chapman, he would be thrilled if the chance to do so presented itself.
Although she has not been in the spotlight much since the song became popular again, Chapman has made a few statements showing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she expressed her happiness for Combs and gratitude for a new generation of fans who love her song. She mentioned that she never thought her song would be on the country charts, but she feels honored to be included.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is given specifically to the songwriters, so Tracy Chapman, the songwriter of the song, became the first Black woman to win the CMA Song of the Year as the sole writer. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.
I apologize for not being able to attend tonight. It is a great honor for my song to be acknowledged after 35 years since it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs and especially to Luke and all the fans of "Fast Car." Thank you all.
Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for the Best Country Solo Performance award at the Grammys this year. This marks his seventh nomination at the Grammy ceremony and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.
The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4, 2024. The event will be shown on CBS and can also be streamed live on Paramount+.
