According to a report from Variety, there is a possibility that Tracy Chapman will make a rare appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards to perform with Luke Combs. Chapman is not known for making frequent public appearances.
According to insiders familiar with the situation, it is reported by Variety that Chapman will be performing "Fast Car" on stage with Luke Combs. The song, originally a folk-pop hit from the late 1980s by Chapman, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from poverty. Surprisingly, Combs included a cover of the song on his Gettin' Old album in 2023, which propelled his version of "Fast Car" to the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it would be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed moments of the event. Variety reported that she has only appeared on camera three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
However, Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with Tracy Chapman, the original songwriter and recording artist of the song. Even though his team stated in July that there were no current plans for a collaboration with Chapman, they did mention that he would be thrilled if the opportunity ever presented itself.
Although she has mostly stayed away from the public eye amid the song's comeback, Chapman has released a few statements showing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she expressed her joy for Combs and appreciation for a new wave of fans who are enjoying her song. Chapman mentioned that she didn't anticipate being on the country charts, but she feels privileged to be included.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This award is specifically for songwriters, and in this case, the honor went to Chapman. This made her the first Black woman to win the CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, a message from her was read out loud from the stage after her win was announced.
"I regret not being able to attend tonight. It is a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged again 35 years after it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs, Luke, and all the supporters of 'Fast Car'."
Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammys this year. This nomination is his seventh at the ceremony. If he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.
The Grammy Awards of 2024 will be televised from the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on February 4, 2024. The event will be shown on CBS and will also be available for live streaming on Paramount+.
