The lyrics were taken from a song called "Cocky" by Rock in 2001, which was part of his album with the same title. The specific part of the song contains the lyrics: "Do you even know who I am? I am Kid Rock from the old days. I have more money than the band Matchbox Twenty and I get more attention from women than Mark McGrath."

Shortly thereafter, well-known YouTuber Finn McKenty proposed that Mark McGrath should be the one to resolve the argument, and he also tagged the lead singer of Sugar Ray.
McGrath responded to the question with humor and confirmed that the person mentioned did indeed rhyme "ass" with McGrath. This response was made through X, which was previously known as Twitter.
