According to a report from Variety, there is a possibility that Tracy Chapman will make a rare public appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards, where she is expected to perform alongside Luke Combs.
According to sources familiar with the situation, Variety has reported that Chapman and Luke Combs will be performing "Fast Car" together on stage. The song, originally released by Chapman in the late 1980s, tells the story of a couple trying to break free from a cycle of poverty. Combs included a cover of the song on his album "Gettin' Old" in 2023, which helped propel the song to the top of the country radio charts.
If Chapman decides to perform at the Grammys, it will be unexpected and probably one of the most discussed moments of the evening. Variety reported that she has only been on camera performing three times since 2009, when she finished her last tour.
However, Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" with Tracy Chapman, the song's original songwriter and recording artist. Despite his team stating that there are currently no plans for them to perform together, Combs would be thrilled if the opportunity presented itself in the future.
Although she has mostly stayed away from the spotlight during the song's comeback, Chapman has released a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached No. 1 on the country charts, she mentioned feeling "happy" for Combs and "thankful" for a new group of fans who have embraced her song. She also mentioned that she never anticipated being on the country charts, but she feels honored to be included.
During the 2023 CMA Awards in November, "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This prestigious honor is given specifically to songwriters, and in this case, it was awarded to Chapman. This win made her the first Black woman to receive the CMA Song of the Year award as the sole songwriter. Although Chapman was not present at the ceremony, she did send a message to be read on her behalf after her win was announced.
I apologize for not being able to join you all tonight. It is a great privilege for my song to be acknowledged again after 35 years since it was first released. I am grateful to the CMAs and especially grateful to Luke and all the fans of "Fast Car."
Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at this year's Grammy Awards. This nomination is his seventh at the Grammys, and if he wins, it will be his first Grammy award.
The 2024 Grammy Awards will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, February 4, 2024. The event will be televised on CBS and will also be available for live streaming on Paramount+.
