CNBC announced that the company plans to either construct new or renovate over 150 "large-format" stores throughout the United States within the next five years. The Associated Press reported that Walmart has not opened any new stores in the last three years.
Details of the new "large-format" Walmart stores have been shared through press images. The Supercenter design for these stores has been revealed by the company, but the specific locations of these stores have not been disclosed yet.
Walmart announced that they will be introducing their "Store of the Future" concept in certain locations, which will include more displays and QR codes for customers to scan for more information on products. The company was already in the process of remodeling 650 locations to incorporate this concept before their announcement on Wednesday.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Walmart president and CEO John Furner mentioned that the company's investments in labor, supplies, and tax revenue amount to millions of dollars. These investments have a positive impact on the communities where Walmart operates.
CNBC reported that the company chose not to disclose the expenses related to the stores.
Walmart has stated that their new stores will prioritize sustainability in their design. They plan to incorporate energy-efficient lighting and equipment throughout these locations.
Aside from focusing on sustainability measures inside their stores, Walmart is also planning to make changes to their parking lot. They have announced their intention to install fast-charging stations for electric cars.
