Expressing Your Personal Journey
My journey towards finding faith in Christ began during a challenging childhood that is often referred to as "dysfunctional" today. However, back then, it was simply the norm in the tumultuous era of the 1960s and 1970s. At that time, we were unaware that there would be a specific term for the struggles we were enduring. Nevertheless, Jesus miraculously stepped into my life and made a significant impact.
My life went through a significant change when someone assisted me in establishing a deep connection with the incomprehensible affection that Jesus has for us.

In a single moment, my entire life was completely transformed. Throughout the course of fifty years, this same love has been my source of strength, carrying me through the highs and lows, the successes and sorrows, as well as the positive experiences. My personal account affirms that the course of my life took a permanent shift when I first experienced the love of God at the age of eighteen.
The reason for my existence and the motivation behind my work is the love of Jesus. As a Christian songwriter, my goal is to assist others in creating songs that can effectively convey this incredible reality. The primary focus of Nashville Christian Songwriters and all our platforms, including podcasts, videos, blogs, and coaching programs, is to spread the message of Jesus' love to every individual on Earth.
Do you have a personal story to share about your faith? It could be that you experienced God's love when you attended church as a child, or perhaps you turned to Him as an adult to overcome addiction. It's also possible that you went through a difficult time, such as a significant loss, which led you to seek solace in God. Many Christian songwriters who have faced immense pain, abuse, or divorce have expressed interest in our coaching programs. They are eager to learn how to convey their struggles and how God has provided them with strength and support. According to James Finley, God does not shield us from hardships but rather sustains us miraculously through them.
However, the question remains: How can we effectively express our personal experiences and stories through powerful and impactful songs?
Throughout our journey in life, we experience both the highs and lows. However, when it comes to expressing these experiences through Christian songs, how can we effectively convey our testimonies? Here are three tips that may assist you in considering ways to capture your personal stories in a manner that resonates with listeners, providing them with love, solace, and optimism.
To begin with, attempt to discover a shared theme in your narrative that many individuals can relate to.
Loneliness and feeling lost are common emotions that everyone can relate to at some point. To make your story resonate with people, it's important to create a connection and allow them to see themselves in your narrative. By including elements that mirror our own experiences, we can become invested in your story and develop a sense of attachment.
If there is nothing in your story that captures our attention and resonates with something we have personally experienced, we will lose interest. One of our friends, Becky Norquist, who is an alum of NCS, has gone through the difficult experience of five miscarriages and one stillbirth. Her music and ministry are centered around supporting grieving families, but she also incorporates enough universal themes in her songs so that anyone who has experienced any form of loss – which includes all of us – can relate to and remain connected to her music.
Next, focus on representing the feeling or mood rather than getting caught up in
I was introduced to the idea by Dave Clark, a well-known songwriter and publisher, and it has stuck with me ever since. At first, it might seem contradictory, but it's actually not. The initial point is to identify a central theme or emotion that will serve as the foundation for your song. The second point is to avoid including unnecessary details in your song that won't contribute to the listener's understanding. If you delve too much into specific locations, times, dates, names, or other specifics, there's a chance that you might lose the listener's interest.
When you identify the shared theme and emotion in your story that resonates with me, it allows me to connect with your song. If the specific details of your experience do not align with mine, it can be off-putting. It may seem challenging, but it is possible. You can learn to find the right amount of detail to focus on conveying your emotions during the difficult times and then shift the narrative towards the redemptive aspect of God's intervention in your life.
…a testimonial song is a type of song that showcases the ways in which God has brought success and victory into your life. …a testimonial song is a song that demonstrates the ways in which God has achieved triumph in your personal experiences.
It is important to acknowledge the unique details that pertain to your own experiences, which may prevent others from relating to your story. To overcome this, it can be beneficial to seek out examples of songs that align with the emotions you want to convey and observe how the songwriters engage listeners by evoking feelings rather than simply listing specific details.
Furthermore, it is essential to understand the distinction between catharsis and testimonial.
When you are still emotionally wounded and in pain from a traumatic experience, it can be difficult to authentically express your feelings through a testimonial song. Pouring your heart out in lyrics may be seen as self-centered, unless you are creating a country song that reflects on personal sorrow. If that's the direction you want to take, go ahead and pursue it. Just be aware that it won't be a genuine testimony, but rather a melancholic country song.
When considering your audience, it's important to acknowledge that they likely have their own challenges and problems to handle. If you only focus on sharing your own pain with them, they might not be willing to listen for very long. That's why professionals like therapists and journals exist – they are designed to provide an outlet for your struggles and emotional baggage. Take a moment to reflect on how your lyrics might impact your listeners. What kind of emotional state are you inviting them into? How will they feel after hearing your song?
In my opinion, Brandon Lake and the Elevation Worship team have done an excellent job with their energetic praise song called "My Testimony" by conveying a message that is based on Scripture and applicable to a broad audience. Instead of writing a song specifically about your own childhood experiences, it might be more beneficial to focus on positive themes from the Bible that illustrate how God's healing power overcomes negativity. There are numerous approaches to sharing your personal testimony, so it would be wise to explore different avenues before sharing your pain with others.
In summary, a testimonial song is one that reflects on how God has overcome challenges in your life. It is crucial for your emotional well-being to experience catharsis. While it may be beneficial to write songs for your own personal cathartic release, it is important to understand the distinction between catharsis and testimonials. Catharsis involves releasing pent-up emotions, while testimonials celebrate God's triumph over the difficulties you have faced and His ultimate victory in your soul, regardless of the path you took to reach it.
