Expressing from a Deep Inner World

A prevalent misconception about Christian songwriting is that by simply acquiring a sufficient amount of tips, techniques, and shortcuts, one can avoid the diligent process of mastering the art of creating impactful songs that resonate with people.

In my opinion, relying solely on tips and tricks is not enough for a devoted Christian songwriter. It is crucial to have a deep spiritual connection with God, which serves as a source of inspiration. With a strong foundation in faith and proficient songwriting abilities, there is no need to resort to shortcuts. The ability to write effectively with clarity and confidence is always accessible when one feels the guidance of the Holy Spirit in their heart.

The prevailing fast-paced nature of our digital society has deeply ingrained in us a mindset that seeks instant results, similar to that of CHATGPT or AI. We believe that with just a few prompts, we should be capable of generating a song within a mere three seconds, one that will amaze and astound everyone.

However, based on what I have observed, the songs that have a lasting impact on the world are not created by writers who rely on shortcuts. These writers are skilled and dedicated practitioners of Christian songwriting, capable of effectively communicating profound messages through their art. They did not simply attempt to write a song one day and miraculously produce masterpieces like "Amazing Grace," "In Christ Alone," or "10,000 Reasons."

Even before the big opportunities came their way, they were already dedicated to studying and improving their craft. They were always learning and honing their skills in order to create impactful music that could deeply resonate with listeners. They aimed to create something that had that indescribable "WOW" factor, which instantly captivated and moved people when they heard it.

Gary Player, a professional golfer, believes that the more he dedicates himself to practicing, the more fortunate he becomes. He acknowledges that his hard work and continuous efforts contribute to his success and increase his chances of achieving positive outcomes.

These individuals are not searching for free Christian songwriting workshops or giveaways in a deceptive manner. These are dedicated songwriters who are already actively engaged in their craft, continuously studying and practicing advanced poetic and lyrical techniques. These are the individuals, both males and females, who are investing their time and effort to reach a much higher level of skill and dedication compared to most aspiring writers who are not willing to do the same for their craft.

We greatly appreciate individuals such as Matt Redman, Matt Maher, Lauren Daigle, and the Gettys for their incredible impact on Christian worship songwriting. It is hard to imagine where we would be without the powerful songs like Chris Tomlin's "Amazing Grace/My Chains Are Gone." However, we tend to overlook the fact that these songwriters have dedicated years to perfecting their skills and have faced numerous challenges in order to improve their songs and ministries.

No one becomes successful overnight, and this is true even for talented individuals like Katy Nichole, who is making waves in the music industry under Centricity Music. Katy has been sharing her songs since she was just fourteen years old. Despite her hit song "In Jesus' Name (God of Possible)" appearing to be a lucky viral success, the truth is that Katy has been working hard at her craft for years. We congratulate Katy on her accomplishments!

Discovering ways to cultivate a fulfilling and abundant inner life is essential for Christian songwriters. Here are three important factors to consider while striving to nurture and convey your faith through your music.

Make soul care a priority. In today's fast-paced world, we often find ourselves overwhelmed with busy schedules and little time for self-care. While it is important to serve and care for others, it is equally crucial to avoid burnout by taking time to rest and rejuvenate. Whatever self-care looks like to you, recognize its significance in nurturing your inner self, as it is interconnected with your overall well-being and physical health.

Nourish your mind. Christian songwriters often overlook the importance of intellectual growth and mistakenly believe that Bible study, prayer, and singing worship songs are the only essential aspects of a holy life. However, the most skilled songwriters understand the significance of deep reading. They recognize that without immersing themselves in incredible words, it is impossible to create exceptional lyrics. If you have stopped reading extensively after college or high school, it is crucial for you to pick up books again. Merely consuming fear-inducing news from network or cable channels does not qualify. If you aspire to write something impactful that will transcend your own existence, it is essential to nourish your intellect with exceptional literature, poetry, and other inspiring works.

Disconnect from negativity. Cable news is solely focused on increasing ratings by instilling fear. Even the "Christian" channels aim to provoke anger in order to retain viewership and promote their sponsored advertisements. Talk radio hosts, shock jocks, and conservative pundits also rely on ratings and sponsorships to maintain their jobs. However, their constant stream of negativity is detrimental to your soul and creativity. Consider taking a break from any form of news for a few weeks and instead, spend that time in peaceful reflection on the love and goodness of God. You may find that your positivity starts to overflow into your creative endeavors. Negativity steals your joy and intensifies fear and anxiety. Take a pause and allow Jesus' spirit to fill your heart and mind once again.

Christian artists and songwriters such as Nichole, Tomlin, Redman, Maher, and many more, are able to write music that stems from their deep connection with God. However, their achievements in the industry can also be attributed to their talent and expertise as Christian songwriters. This reminds me of a famous quote by Australian golfer Gary Player, who emphasized the importance of practice in increasing one's chances of success.

While you are working on cultivating your skills in Christian songwriting, it is essential to also focus on nurturing a meaningful inner life. It is important to remember that the world is in need of fresh and courageous expressions in your music, rather than recycled phrases and concepts that have been heard for many years.
