Expressing Inner Thoughts through Writing

A prevalent misconception regarding Christian songwriting is that by simply acquiring a sufficient amount of advice, shortcuts, and techniques, one can avoid the challenging process of mastering the art of creating impactful songs that resonate with people.

In my opinion, relying solely on tips and tricks is not enough for a dedicated Christian songwriter. It is important to have a deep connection with God and a rich inner life, as well as strong songwriting skills. With these qualities, there is no need to search for shortcuts or quick fixes. The clarity and confidence to write well will always be readily available whenever you feel inspired by the Holy Spirit.

The modern culture of quick and convenient digital experiences has influenced us to adopt a mindset that expects instant results, similar to the capabilities of AI models like CHATGPT. We believe that with just a few prompts, we should be able to effortlessly generate a song within seconds that will impress everyone.

However, based on what I have observed, the songs that have a lasting impact on the world are not created by writers who rely on shortcuts or easy methods. Instead, these songs are crafted by skilled Christian songwriters who effectively communicate their messages through their art. They do not simply attempt to write a song on a whim and accidentally create masterpieces like "Amazing Grace," "In Christ Alone," or "10,000 Reasons."

Even before the major opportunities arose, they were already invested in studying and striving to become exceptional in their craft. They were consistently learning and honing their skills in order to create impactful lyrics and melodies that could captivate listeners and evoke strong emotions. Their goal was to create something truly remarkable, a sound that had an indescribable "WOW" factor that would leave a lasting impression on anyone who heard it.

According to professional golfer Gary Player, the more time and effort I dedicate to practicing, the more fortunate I become in my game.

These individuals are not actively searching for free Christian songwriting workshops or giveaways. They are dedicated songwriters who are already committed to their craft, actively studying and practicing advanced poetic and lyrical techniques. These individuals are paying their dues and investing considerable time to create music at a much higher standard compared to most aspiring writers who may not be willing to put in the same level of effort.

We greatly appreciate individuals such as Matt Redman, Matt Maher, Lauren Daigle, and the Gettys for their incredible impact on the creation of Christian worship songs. It is difficult to imagine where we would be without Chris Tomlin's powerful rendition of "Amazing Grace/My Chains Are Gone." However, we tend to overlook the fact that these songwriters have dedicated years to perfecting their skills and have faced numerous challenges in order to improve their songs and ministries.

No one becomes skilled at creating catchy song titles or hooks overnight, and this applies to everyone, including the rising star of Centricity Music, Katy Nichole. She has been sharing her songs online since she was just fourteen, and her popular track "In Jesus' Name (God of Possible)" may seem like it gained viral success by luck, but that is not the case. Katy has been dedicated to her craft for years, and we applaud her for it.

Tips for Cultivating a Fulfilling Inner Life as a Christian Songwriter

As a Christian songwriter, there are numerous approaches to nurture and enhance your inner life. Here are three essential factors to consider while striving to expand and convey your faith through your music.

Make taking care of your soul a priority. In our fast-paced lives, it can be easy to neglect our own well-being. However, it is important to remember that while we should always be caring and serving others, we cannot forget to take care of ourselves. If we don't take the time to rest and recharge, we will eventually become burnt out. So, whatever self-care looks like to you, it is essential for maintaining a healthy inner life, which in turn impacts our overall well-being and physical health.

Nourish your intellect. Many Christian songwriters tend to neglect their intellectual growth and wrongly assume that Bible study, prayer, and singing worship songs are the only important aspects of leading a sanctified life. However, the most successful songwriters recognize the importance of deep reading. They understand that it is impossible to create remarkable lyrics if they have not first immersed themselves in a wealth of knowledge. If you have not continued reading beyond college or high school, it is crucial for you to pick up books again. Merely consuming fear-inducing news or reinforcing your cultural biases through network or cable news does not suffice. If you aspire to write something impactful that will endure even beyond your own lifetime, it is essential to nourish your mind with great literature, poetry, and other inspiring works.

Disconnect from negativity. Cable news is solely focused on increasing ratings by spreading fear. Even the so-called "Christian" stations thrive on angering viewers to keep them engaged and exposed to their sponsored advertisements. Talk radio hosts, shock jocks, and conservative pundits maintain their jobs by boosting ratings and securing sponsorships for their shareholders. However, the constant flow of negativity they emit is detrimental to your soul and stifles your creativity. Consider abstaining from consuming any news for a few weeks and utilize that time to sit quietly and contemplate the love and goodness of God. You will likely notice that your positive mindset begins to overflow into your artistic expressions. Negativity steals your happiness and intensifies feelings of fear and anxiety. Take a break and allow Jesus' Spirit to replenish your heart and mind.

Christian artists and songwriters such as Nichole, Tomlin, Redman, Maher, and many more, find inspiration in their deep connection with God. However, their achievements can also be attributed to their talent and proficiency as Christian songwriters. A famous quote by Australian golfer Gary Player encapsulates this notion: "The more I practice, the luckier I get."

While you are working on honing your songwriting abilities for your Christian ministry, it is important to not neglect the growth of your inner self. It is crucial to offer the world something fresh, daring, courageous, and freeing, rather than simply recycling the same old phrases and ideas that have been around for years.
