Expressing Thoughts from a Deep Inner World
A widespread misconception regarding Christian songwriting is that by simply acquiring a sufficient amount of advice, shortcuts, and techniques, one can effortlessly avoid the arduous process of mastering the art of creating impactful songs that resonate with people.
In my opinion, relying solely on tips and tricks is not enough for a Christian songwriter. It is important to have a deep connection with God and a vibrant inner life, as well as strong songwriting abilities. With these qualities, there is no need to search for shortcuts or quick fixes. The ability to write well with clarity and confidence is always available whenever you feel the inspiration of the Holy Spirit in your heart.

The modern era of quick and convenient digital services has influenced our thinking to expect instant results, making us believe that we can replicate the abilities of advanced AI systems like CHATGPT. We often assume that we should be able to input a few prompts and generate a song within a matter of seconds, which would impress everyone.
However, based on what I have observed, the songs that have a lasting impact on the world are not created by writers who rely on shortcuts or quick fixes. Instead, these songwriters are dedicated practitioners of the art of Christian songwriting, effectively communicating profound messages through their music. They do not simply attempt to write a song on a whim and accidentally stumble upon masterpieces like "Amazing Grace," "In Christ Alone," or "10,000 Reasons."
Before the arrival of the prominent figures, these individuals were already immersed in studying and striving to become masters in their craft. They were continuously learning how to skillfully combine impactful words and melodies to create captivating compositions that could deeply resonate with audiences, evoking strong emotions. They aimed to create something truly remarkable and awe-inspiring, a unique quality that is difficult to put into words but can be instantly recognized when experienced.
According to professional golfer Gary Player, the more I dedicate myself to practicing, the more fortunate I become in my endeavors.
These individuals are not searching for free Christian songwriting workshops or giveaways. They are dedicated and committed songwriters who are already actively engaged in their craft. They are continuously learning and honing their skills in order to achieve the highest standards of poetics and lyrical techniques. These are the individuals who are investing their time and effort to create at a much more advanced level compared to the majority of aspiring writers who are not willing to put in the same level of dedication.
We greatly appreciate individuals such as Matt Redman, Matt Maher, Lauren Daigle, and the Gettys for their incredible impact on Christian worship songwriting. It's hard to imagine where we would be without Chris Tomlin's "Amazing Grace/My Chains Are Gone." However, we tend to overlook the fact that these songwriters have dedicated years to perfecting their skills and have faced various challenges in order to improve their songs and ministries.
No one becomes skilled at creating catchy song titles or "hooks" overnight, and this is especially true for the rising star in Centricity Music, Katy Nichole. She has been sharing her songs online since she was only fourteen years old. While her hit song "In Jesus' Name (God of Possible)" may appear to have gained sudden popularity, it is important to note that Katy has been working on her music for many years. Let's give her a round of applause for her dedication and perseverance!
Tips for Cultivating a Fulfilling Inner Life as a Christian Songwriter
As a Christian songwriter, there are numerous avenues to enhance and nourish your inner life. To further develop and convey your faith through music, consider these three essential aspects.
Make soul care a priority. In our fast-paced and demanding lives, it can be easy to neglect taking care of our inner selves. However, it is crucial that we prioritize our own rest and rejuvenation alongside our responsibilities to others. Taking care of ourselves is essential for maintaining a healthy and balanced life, as our inner well-being is interconnected with our external circumstances and physical health.
Nourish your intellect. Many Christian songwriters often overlook the importance of engaging their intellects. They mistakenly believe that focusing solely on Bible study, prayer, and singing worship songs is enough for a holy life. However, the most accomplished songwriters understand the value of reading extensively. They recognize that it is impossible to write truly remarkable lyrics without first being filled with remarkable words. If you have neglected reading beyond your college or high school years, it is crucial for you to pick up books again. Merely consuming fear-inducing news from television networks or cable channels does not suffice. If you aspire to write something impactful that will endure beyond your own lifetime, it is essential to nourish your mind with exceptional literature, poetry, and other inspiring creations.
Disconnect from negativity. Cable news is focused on increasing ratings by spreading fear. Even the channels that claim to have a Christian focus use anger to keep you engaged and watching their advertisements. Talk radio hosts, shock jocks, and conservative pundits maintain their jobs by boosting ratings and attracting sponsors. However, the constant stream of negativity they emit is detrimental to your soul and your ability to be creative. Take a break from consuming any kind of news for a few weeks and use that time to sit quietly and reflect on the love and goodness of God. You may find that your positivity begins to overflow into your music. Negativity steals your joy and heightens feelings of fear and anxiety. Take a pause and allow Jesus' Spirit to fill your heart and mind once again.
Christian artists and songwriters such as Nichole, Tomlin, Redman, Maher, and many others are able to create music that stems from their deep connection with God. However, their achievements can also be attributed to their talent and expertise in the field of Christian songwriting. This reminds me of the well-known quote by Australian golfer Gary Player, who once said, "The more I practice, the luckier I get."
While you are working on expanding your skills in Christian songwriting, it is important to remember to also cultivate a deep and fulfilling personal life. The world is in need of fresh and daring creations from you, rather than regurgitated phrases and concepts that have been around for years.
