Expressing from a Deep Inner World
There is a prevailing misconception surrounding Christian songwriting, which suggests that by acquiring sufficient advice, techniques, and shortcuts, one can effortlessly avoid the arduous process of acquiring the skills needed to create impactful songs that resonate with people.
In my opinion, relying solely on tips and tricks is not enough for Christian songwriters. It is essential to have a deep and meaningful connection with God, which will serve as a constant source of inspiration. With a strong foundation in both spirituality and songwriting skills, there is no need to resort to shortcuts. The ability to write well with clarity and confidence will always be readily available, especially when one feels the movement of the Holy Spirit in their heart.

The fast-paced nature of our digital society has influenced us to adopt a mindset similar to that of microwaves. It has made us believe that we can become as efficient and capable as CHATGPT or AI. We now expect to effortlessly generate a mind-blowing song within seconds by simply inputting a few prompts.
However, based on what I have observed, the songs that have a lasting impact on the world are not created by writers who rely on shortcuts or quick fixes. Instead, these songs are crafted by skilled Christian songwriters who effectively communicate through their art. They do not simply attempt to write a song randomly and accidentally create something as powerful as "Amazing Grace," "In Christ Alone," or "10,000 Reasons."
Before the arrival of the big ones, these individuals were already dedicated to studying and honing their skills in their chosen art. They consistently worked on improving their ability to create impactful lyrics and melodies, forming captivating compositions that could deeply resonate with listeners on an emotional level. Their aim was to create something that possessed an indescribable yet undeniable "WOW" factor, which could instantly be recognized and appreciated by anyone who hears it.
According to professional golfer Gary Player, the more effort I put into practicing, the more fortunate I become.
These individuals are not seeking out free Christian songwriting workshops or giveaways. They are dedicated songwriters who are already actively engaged in their craft, constantly learning and honing their skills in poetic and lyrical techniques. These men and women are committed to their craft, investing their time and effort to create at a much higher standard than what I observe from most aspiring writers.
We greatly respect individuals such as Matt Redman, Matt Maher, Lauren Daigle, and the Gettys for their remarkable impact on Christian worship songwriting. It is difficult to imagine the Christian music scene without the influential work of Chris Tomlin, particularly his rendition of "Amazing Grace/My Chains Are Gone." However, we often overlook the fact that these songwriters have dedicated numerous years to perfecting their skills and have faced various challenges in order to improve their songs and ministries.
No one becomes skilled at creating catchy song titles or hooks overnight, and this applies to the rising star in Centricity Music, Katy Nichole, as well. Katy has been sharing her songs online since she was just fourteen years old, and her popular hit "In Jesus' Name (God of Possible)" may seem like a lucky viral success, but that is not the case. Katy has been working on her music for many years. Congratulations to her for her dedication and success!
Ways to Cultivate a Fulfilling Inner Life
As a Christian songwriter, there are numerous ways you can enhance and nourish your inner life. Here are three important factors to consider while striving to deepen your faith and convey it through your music.
Make soul care a top priority. In today's fast-paced and overwhelming world, we often neglect taking care of our own souls. Although it is important to show care and serve others, it is equally crucial to take the time to rest and replenish ourselves. Whatever self-care practices resonate with you, consider them essential for nurturing your inner being, as it directly links to the overall well-being of your outer life and physical body.
Nurturing your intellect is crucial. Many Christian songwriters tend to neglect their intellectual growth, believing that Bible study, prayer, and singing worship songs are the only important aspects of a holy life. However, the most exceptional songwriters understand the importance of delving deep into various sources of knowledge. They acknowledge that it is impossible to create remarkable lyrics if they haven't first immersed themselves in profound words. If you haven't engaged in reading since college or even high school, it is essential for you to revisit books. Merely watching network or cable news to fuel your fears and reinforce your cultural biases is not sufficient. If you aspire to write something impactful that can transcend your own lifetime, it is imperative to nourish your mind with exceptional literature, poetry, and other sources of inspiration.
Disconnect from negativity. Cable news is solely focused on increasing ratings by instilling fear. Even the “Christian” channels thrive on provoking anger in order to maintain viewership and advertise their sponsors. Talk radio, shock jocks, and conservative pundits also rely on high ratings and sponsorships to keep their positions. However, the constant negativity they spread is detrimental to your spirit and creativity. Consider abstaining from any form of news for a few weeks and utilize that time to reflect peacefully on the love and goodness of God. Notice how your positivity begins to overflow into your music. Negativity steals your joy and intensifies fear and anxiety. Take a break and replenish your heart and mind with the Spirit of Jesus once again.
Christian musicians and lyricists such as Nichole, Tomlin, Redman, Maher, and many more create their music from a place of abundant connection with God. However, their achievements can also be attributed to their proficiency as Christian songwriters. It reminds me of the famous quote by Australian golfer Gary Player, who stated that the more he practiced, the more fortunate he became.
While you are working on improving your Christian songwriting skills, it is important to also focus on nurturing your inner self. It is essential to offer something fresh, courageous, and freeing to the world through your music, rather than simply regurgitating cliched phrases and ideas that have been heard for years.
