Exploring the Depths of Personal Experience
There is a prevalent misconception surrounding Christian songwriting which suggests that by acquiring a sufficient amount of advice, shortcuts, and strategies, one can effortlessly skip the arduous process of mastering the art of creating impactful songs that resonate with people.
In my opinion, relying solely on tips and tricks is not enough for a dedicated Christian songwriter. It is important to have a deep connection with God and a rich inner life to draw inspiration from. When you possess this connection and have strong songwriting skills, there is no need to search for shortcuts. The ability to write well with clarity and confidence is always accessible when you feel the movement of the Holy Spirit in your heart.

The prevalence of our fast-paced digital culture has conditioned us to expect instant results, similar to the efficiency of microwaves. We have this belief that we can emulate the capabilities of CHATGPT or AI, where we should be able to input a few prompts and generate a song within three seconds that will impress everyone.
However, based on what I have witnessed, the songs that have a lasting impact on the world are not created by mediocre writers. Instead, they are crafted by skilled Christian songwriters who possess a deep understanding of their craft. These individuals communicate profound messages through their art, and their songs like "Amazing Grace," "In Christ Alone," or "10,000 Reasons" were not simply a result of random attempts at songwriting.
Before the big ones arrived, they were already dedicated to studying and striving for excellence in their craft. They consistently educated themselves on the art of creating impactful lyrics and melodies, molding them into captivating compositions that could deeply touch the emotions of listeners. Their goal was to create something so extraordinary, something that had an indescribable "WOW" factor that could only be understood when experienced.
According to professional golfer Gary Player, the greater amount of practice I engage in, the more fortunate I become.
These individuals are not searching for free Christian songwriting workshops or giveaways. They are dedicated and motivated songwriters who are already actively engaged in their craft. They are committed to continuously improving their skills and exploring advanced poetic and lyrical techniques. Unlike many aspiring writers, these men and women are willing to invest their time and effort to create at a much higher standard.
We have great respect for individuals such as Matt Redman, Matt Maher, Lauren Daigle, and the Gettys for their incredible impact on Christian worship songwriting. It's hard to imagine where we would be without Chris Tomlin's powerful rendition of "Amazing Grace/My Chains Are Gone." However, we tend to overlook the fact that these songwriters have dedicated years of their lives to developing their skills and have faced numerous challenges in refining their songs and ministries.
No one becomes skilled at creating catchy song titles or hooks overnight, including the rising star Katy Nichole from Centricity Music. Katy has been sharing her songs since she was only fourteen years old. Although her hit song "In Jesus' Name (God of Possible)" may appear to have gone viral by luck, this is not the case. Katy has been dedicated to her craft for many years, and we congratulate her on her success.
Ways to Cultivate a Fulfilling Inner Life as a Christian Songwriter
As a Christian songwriter, there are numerous approaches to fostering a deep and gratifying inner life. Here are three essential factors to consider while striving to enhance and convey your faith through your music.
Make your soul care a priority. In today's fast-paced world, we often find ourselves overwhelmed and with little time to take care of our own well-being. While it is important to be caring and helpful towards others, neglecting our own need for rest and rejuvenation can lead to burnout. It is crucial to recognize the significance of self-care in maintaining a healthy inner life, which is closely intertwined with the overall care of our external life and physical health.
Nourish your intellect. Many Christian songwriters tend to overlook the importance of engaging their minds and assume that focusing solely on Bible study, prayer, and singing worship songs is enough for a spiritually enriched life. However, the most talented songwriters understand the significance of delving into deep reading. They recognize that it is impossible to create remarkable lyrics without first immersing themselves in an abundance of written content. If you have neglected reading since college or high school, it is crucial for you to pick up books again, as this experience is irreplaceable. Merely consuming news from network or cable channels, which often reinforce your fears and cultural biases, does not suffice. If you aspire to write something impactful that can withstand the test of time, it is essential to nourish your mind with exceptional literature, poetry, and other sources of inspiration.
Disconnect from negativity. Cable news channels focus on fear-inducing content in order to boost their ratings. Even stations that claim to have Christian values often try to provoke anger in order to keep viewers engaged and exposed to their sponsored advertisements. Talk radio hosts, controversial entertainers, and conservative commentators maintain their positions by attracting high ratings and securing sponsorships for their stakeholders. However, the constant stream of negativity they promote can have a detrimental effect on your spiritual well-being and creative abilities. Consider taking a break from consuming any form of news for a few weeks and instead spend that time in quiet reflection, contemplating the love and goodness of God. You may find that your newfound positivity starts to permeate your music. Negativity not only steals your joy but also intensifies feelings of fear and anxiety. Allow yourself some time off and replenish your heart and mind with the spirit of Jesus once again.
Christian artists and songwriters such as Nichole, Tomlin, Redman, and Maher are able to create their music from a place of abundant connection with God. However, their achievements are also influenced by their talent and proficiency as Christian songwriters. It's similar to what the renowned Australian golfer Gary Player once expressed, stating that the more he practiced, the more fortunate he became.
While you focus on honing your skills in Christian songwriting, it is important to also prioritize the growth of your inner self. It is crucial to offer something fresh, daring, courageous, and freeing to the world through your music, rather than simply recycling cliché phrases and concepts that have been heard for years.
